Neumann U67 Reissue

What is a blog for if you aren’t going to share cool moments? I normally do not do unboxings because I don’t like them and I don’t see any value in them but this was a huge moment for me and I wanted to document it and share it.

When I first started my youtube channel Podcastage, I struggled to buy every single mic I reviews. A $20 mic was a stretch. After 5 years of consistent uploading, nearly 500 videos, and an amount of money I do not want to calculate spent on gear to review, I was finally able to get one of the top tier holy grail microphones. The Neumann U67 Reissue.

This is the sequel to the U47 following the announcement that Telefunken would stop manufacturing the VF 14 M metal tube. There is a really fascinating post about the history of the U67 on Coutant here if you want to know more: http://www.coutant.org/u67/.

I’ll be recording a lot of music with this on the bandrewplays youtube channel (if I can keep up the weekly release over there), and I will be putting it on the mic stand for the Bandrew Says Podcast once the AEA KU5a comes down in one month.

Guest Spot on the VypDrive Podcast

I had the pleasure and honor to be on the VypDrive podcast, hosted by Vyper. This show was an absolute blast and the hour flew by.

We discussed everything from the Blue Yeti, Dynamic vs. Condenser Microphones, The SM7b, and anything and everything in between. It was an amazing chat, and Vyyyper is one of the best hosts out there right now, and one of the hardest working guys on youtube.

If you want to check out Vyyyper’s projects check out his main channel: Vyyyper and his podcast live streams at: VypLive, and check out his twitter @Vyyyper.

There's No Reason It Can't Be Fun

A cover I just made of the song “Hair” by the band The Early November (one of my favorite bands from the 2000’s)

Back before I started making review videos, I made videos playing music on youtube, and I played in bands as well. Once I started acquiring gear that I could have only dreamed of when I was a kid, oddly enough I stopped making as much music. I have written music here and there for fun, but in no way shape or form have I written or recorded the amount I used to.

Therefore, I am setting a goal to record music with each of the higher end mics that I have reviewed and will be reviewing because it truly is a crime to have the gear that I have and not use it for it’s intended purpose.

This decision and motivation has come from multiple events. First, I have had multiple conversations with a gent about gear, and people’s misconception that you need the best gear to make it, which is not the case. All you need is an idea and some form of recorder to get it out. If the idea is good enough, people will enjoy it regardless. Our conversations have been incredibly inspiring to me to get back into being creative with my time as opposed to just reviewing stuff.

And second, the nail in the coffin, came while watching Joe Bob’s Last Drive in when he shared his final thoughts regarding film making he said something that hit me right in my blackened heart and it applies to music, youtube, writing, or painting just as much as it does to filmmaking:

“Be prepared to fail, for a day or a week or a year, but don’t ever say ‘I’m not a filmmaker’. You’re a film maker, that’s what filmmakers do, they fail until they don’t. And then send me your movie, because believe it or not, I’m dying to see it, we all are. WE JUST DIDN’T KNOW IT UNTIL YOU MADE IT”.

The moral of the story is, I’m going to do everything I can to get back into making music, because that’s my first love, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do, and it’s one of the things I do best (even if the final product would make you think otherwise). I challenge you to stop putting off the thing you love, and get working on it. We only have one life, and there’s no reason it can’t be fun.

Why Are There Differing Opinions on Microphones?

The absolute legend Curtis Judd was recently asked why reviewers have such a wide variance in opinions of the same microphone. Curtis was kind enough to ask me to chat with him about this topic, and we spent 30 minutes discussing a few reasons why this might be. I had so much fun chatting on this topic and was honored that Curtis asked me to be a part of this discussion. I hope you learn something from this video, and would love to hear your thoughts on the topic.

If you do not follow Curtis on youtube, you absolute have to. He makes extremely high quality videos covering audio, lighting, and video production, and I guarantee you’ll learn a bunch from him.

Sunshine Summit March 2020

On March 16th, I was on the Sunshine Summit hosted by Heather Welch of the Sunshine & Powercuts Podcast along with another guest Ben, the host of Tourette’s Podcast. On the stream we talk about connections, and answer questions from the Geeks Rising live stream we did last year, and answered a bunch of questions from the live stream viewers as well. It was an absolute blast of a chat and I highly recommend checking it out as Heather & Ben share amazing stories!

Thank you so much to Heather for inviting me and Ben on, and I highly recommend y’all check out both of their shows which can also be found on the Geeks Rising Podcast Network.
